Illustrations Take Center Stage in Re-telling of Coyote’s Legend; Children’s Book by Brad Whitewolf

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Coyote Visions” by Brad Whitewolf.

Vivid illustrations help tell the story of Coyote, a hero and trickster in American Indian legends credited with bringing the buffalo to the plains. This new children’s book from Dog Ear Publishing relays the legend in easy-to-understand language appropriate for reading aloud.

Coyote, the culture hero and trickster of many Native American people, may seem like an unlikely hero, but legend has it that he saved people from hunger. This new imaginative, illustrated book tells the story of how Coyote brought the buffalo to the plains after a drought burned crops, leaving people desperate and hungry.

In “Coyote Visions,” the author retells the American Indian story of the Great Spirit, who puts great responsibility on Coyote, asking him to provide food and shelter for the people. In the legend, buffalo live in the clouds, far from the hunters’ reach. Coyote shoots arrows into the sky to create a ladder, climbs up and carves a hole through the sky. He confronts the lead buffalo and tricks him into charging him. Once the herd sees their leader running, they soon follow him through the hole in the clouds and land on the prairie.

Graphic illustrator Brad Whitewolf, an oral storyteller, has shared this story of Coyote around campfires, in schools and in theaters. This book allows his colorful illustrations to help tell the story, showing the passion he has for the legend. Whitewolf is working on another book, “Coyote the Trickster,” which will explore Coyote’s trickster nature. Whitewolf, who lives in Wesley, Ark., illustrated “The Dream – I Wanna Fly” children’s book written by Beth Severe for the Aviation Cadet Museum.
