New Children’s Book Features Vacation That’s Out of This World; Book by Sabrina Mincin

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Catching a Shooting Star” by Sabrina Mincin.

A little girl dreams of vacationing in the solar system instead of California. This new children’s book released by Dog Ear Publishing, which tells her story, is appropriate for dreamers of all ages.

When she and her mother can’t decide where to travel for vacation, Nina makes plans of her own. Instead of visiting California, where her mother wants to spend vacation, Nina catches a shooting star in this new children’s story, traveling from planet to planet on an unbelievable tour of the solar system.

Nina’s plan seems simple: Travel on a rainbow and use a golden lasso to catch a shooting star – just the way a “star princess” would. Every time her mother makes a suggestion, Nina counters with one of her own. Instead of riding a trolley car in San Francisco with her mom, she proposes dancing on Saturn’s rings. Nina also suggests toasting marshmallows on Mercury instead of making them by a simple campfire. A shooting star brings an unexpected chance to take her dream vacation.

Whimsical illustrations by Carolynn Mincin add character to this charming story that shows dreams – even those that seem fantastical – can come true.  Author Sabrina Mincin, 16, wrote this story when she was 6 years old. She didn’t think about publishing the book until she was a sophomore in high school. She is already working on her next book.

New Non-Fiction Release Aids People Seeking More Fulfilling Employment

Dog Ear Publishing releases Joyful Mondays by Lola Brown, Ph.D.

This new non-fiction release by Dog Ear Publishing provides an inspiring peek into the lives of people who have sought out and found work that they find to be enriching and stimulating as well as tips for readers who have not yet found their vocational niche.

Upon achieving adulthood, most people seek out gainful employment in order to pay their bills and enable a lifestyle that they can enjoy; unfortunately, far too many people find themselves dreading the start of a new work week.  They find their jobs to be boring or unpleasant, or they simply feel that they’re not doing the job they’re meant to do.  How does one wrest oneself from the 9 to 5 rut? How does the average worker find the job that makes them glad to head back to their workplace at the end of the weekend?

Lola Brown, Ph.D., has interviewed many people who find their work enriching and fulfilling in order to find out how they got themselves on the right path.  Some of these people started out their careers in the fields they loved, but others started out in jobs that they found to be joyless and uninspiring.  Through perseverance and an insistence on listening to the small voice deep inside that told them they could find work that could instill the passion they lacked in their prior jobs, these inspirational people jerked themselves free from the shackles of repressive and nonstimulating employment.

Joyful Mondays is an instructive source to all readers eager to make a change for the better in their current employment situation.  Author Lola Brown, Ph.D., provides the reader with interesting examples of people who have already improved their work lives as well as the tools for the average reader to make a change in their own professional environment.  Brown, a psychologist who derives great joy in practicing her profession, resides in San Juan Capistrano, California, with her husband.

Pastor Aims to Inspire Spiritual Reflection with New Journal; Book by the Rev. Larry Edmunds

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Journey Within: Moving to the Center of Your Growth” by the Rev. Larry Edmunds with Penny Schricker.

The author, a Baptist pastor, has designed a journal that helps people apply spiritual principles to their own lives. This new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, features photos, inspirational messages and thought-provoking questions to help readers search for deeper meaning in everyday situations and progress in their spiritual comprehension.

It is not enough to grasp God’s goodness for oneself; instead, people must exercise that realization in their daily lives, suggests the Rev. Larry Edmunds in his new book. The Baptist pastor designed this journal to help individuals apply spiritual principles to their own lives in a concrete way. The book also allows people to chronicle their unique journey in faith and spiritual living, whether individually or in a group setting. Both methods provide a practical way to express spiritual reflection and personal action.

The introduction for “Journey Within” invites readers to use the journal as a tool for the journey, a map of areas to explore, an outline for a personal travel log, a source to focus on the real path of their lives, and a place “to witness the jewels God has placed within you and in your life,” Edmunds writes. The book offers a chance for prayerful meditation inspired by stunning photos and inspirational words, including scripture, followed by questions and space for journaling. For instance, a page reminding readers that Jesus is the bread of life leads to questions on how much time and energy someone spends shopping, cooking and feeding their physical body vs. how much time that person spends feeding his spirit. It concludes with this passage from John 6:35: “Jesus Said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

Readers searching for something more out of life can explore the deeper meaning of seemingly everyday things in life that can open them to deeper levels of spiritual comprehension. The journal, with its personal approach, “creates a therapeutic new self-image leading to a more positive and fulfilling life,” Edmunds writes.

Author Larry Edmunds, pastor at Gethsemani Missionary Baptist Church in Las Vegas, is CEO of L&M Global Outreach Ministry Consultants. The Christian-based agency encourages an evangelistic approach that supports personal spiritual growth. Edmunds’ wife is Maxine Heard Edmunds. Penny Schricker is the book’s collaborator.

New Release Shares Employees’ Views on Borders Books and Music Closing; Book by Rebecca Van Der Jagt

Dog Ear Publishing releases Sold Everywhere but Borders by Rebecca Van Der Jagt.

The Borders Books and Music Store in Ramsey, N.J., was just one of the stores affected by the company’s liquidation sale in 2011. This new release from Dog Ear Publishing tells the story of how employees dealt with the loss of their jobs and their courage in finding inspiration to try new things.

The country lost more than a place to relax while perusing books, music and magazines when Borders Books and Music closed all stores in September 2011. The country also lost more than 11,000 jobs. This new book details the liquidation of the Borders store in Ramsey, just one of many that closed its doors just months after liquidation companies bought the company in July 2011. The once-proud store took on a new persona, covered with “going out of business” banners and discount signs, and the staff struggles to deal with the closure.

Sold Everywhere but Borders tells the story of liquidation through the eyes of more than 10 employees, whose tales are brought together by narrator Becca, who had been at the store just over a month when employees heard the devastating news. Through thick and thin, the employees realize one thing keeps them coming back to the store – their relationships with each other. The author’s deep feelings about losing the store ring out clearly, as in this passage from the preface: “We, the employees of Ramsey Borders, were forced to facilitate our beloved bookstore’s death.”

Even as employees mourned the store, however, its liquidation brought out courage and the confidence to take on new challenges and work on dreams they had neglected while working at Borders. “We were more than the lanyard that hung around our necks and bore our names,” she writes. Poems, drawings, photographs and cartoons add depth to this realistic picture of what can happen when a deeply loved institution ceases to exist and its toll on both customers and staff.

Author Rebecca Van Der Jagt, who began working at Borders in June 2011, is pursuing a Masters degree in Sociology and Education at Columbia Teachers College. She hopes to become both a writer and an educator.

New Fiction Release Grim Tale of One Man’s Downward Spiral From Using Drugs; Book by Joseph P. Bovenzi

Dog Ear Publishing releases “An American Doper” by Joseph P. Bovenzi.

This new book published by Dog Ear Publishing is a gripping and realistic portrayal of the horrors of the drug industry in America, and the drastic way it can destroy the lives of those who are involved, from the buyers and dealers to the people who love them and the law enforcement officers who are trying to keep the peace.

As a young man, Dominic Valerio was subjected to bullying and taunts from the other boys in his neighborhood; desperate to fit in with his peers, Dominic started smoking pot when his biggest bully (and his greatest hero) forced him to join in when the other boys were lighting up a pipe.  From there, Dominic found that selling pot was not just a profitable pastime, but also his ticket into the in-crowd at his high school.  After graduation, Dominic continued to sell drugs, branching out from pot to heavier drugs, primarily cocaine and pills.   He was making a lot of money, and he enjoyed the cache that came from being a well-known dealer.   What more could a young man want?

Unfortunately, Dominic’s fiancée, Jules, does not approve of the drugs or the changes they wreak upon Dominic’s personality.  When she breaks their engagement, Dominic is forced to reconsider his lifestyle.  In  order to keep the only woman he’s loved, Dominic decides to bring his days as a dealer (and user) to a close;  Jules marries him, and they embark on their life on the straight and narrow path together.  Life goes on, if a bit slowly, but soon Dominic and Jules find it’s becoming difficult to make ends meet, even with Dominic taking a second job delivering pizzas.  When their house is in danger of foreclosure, Dominic makes a fateful decision: to revisit his seedy past for “one last deal”, just to get a quick cash infusion to keep his young family afloat.  Will he be able to pull himself out of the quicksand of the drug dealer’s lifestyle?  Will Dominic be able to resist sampling his product?  Can his relationship survive?

An American Doper is a compelling and realistic portrait of a man whose attempts at keeping his lifestyle clean buckle under the harsh financial realities of supporting his family; Dominic’s struggles to stay afloat and his eventual descent into drug dealing and addiction are made all the more tragic by their authenticity.  Author Joseph P. Bovenzi has used his own experience with meth addiction to shed light upon the dark underbelly of drug use; Bovenzi is clean and sober, and is a proud graduate of the University of Phoenix.  Bovenzi resides in Rio Rancho, NM, with his wife and two children.    This is his first book.

New Release Explores Reiki in light of ancient Mystery Teachings; Book by Jeannie Kidwell, PhD and Gianna Settin, PhD.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Reiki: The Mystery Teachings” by Jeannie Kidwell, PhD and Gianna Settin, PhD.

In this groundbreaking book, two psychologists and longtime Reiki teachers explore the spiritual and philosophical mysteries that lie behind the ancient healing art of Reiki.  This book released by Dog Ear Publishing satisfies the spiritual hunger for all who seek to know and understand more during these times of rapid personal and planetary evolution.

Reiki teachers and practitioners, as well as all who are interested in healing and spiritual advancement, will benefit from this book.  On the threshold of the “fourth phase of Reiki,” this new book merges ancient wisdom from esoteric mystery teachings with thought-provoking insights into the inner workings of Reiki.

In “Reiki: The Mystery Teachings,” readers are introduced to a spiritually advanced view of Reiki. The authors present new perspectives on the unique waveform of Reiki–what they refer to as “the Reiki Wave”; the anatomy of the Empowerment; an analysis of commonly-held beliefs about Reiki; the importance of Intent; the “Big Heart-Mind” of Reiki and how it taps into the Big Heart-Mind of the Universe; moving energy with Reiki meditation; the importance of “doing the work” and Reiki and the Psyche and Soul. The authors also share their understanding of how “keys” for spiritual advancement are built into each level of Reiki and how the Reiki Empowerment entrains with the higher-finer vibrational energy of the Higher Self of each individual.

In the authors’ words:  “Reiki isn’t just to heal a wound or to feel good–it is far more than this. It is setting up your system for receiving contact with the spiritual realms…delving into the Great Mysteries encourages the seeking of answers, enlivens intuition, opens our minds and hearts to possibilities.”

Authors Jeannie Kidwell and Gianna Settin began their collaboration after decades of experience in similar careers in psychology, private clinic practice and teaching at universities, as well as Reiki. Dr. Kidwell teaches and practices Reiki in California, and Dr. Settin teaches and practices Reiki in Colorado.

New Non-Fiction Release Delves Into History of the Commercial Food Canning and Preserving Industry in Northeastern Colorado

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Colorado’s Small Town Industrial Revolution” by Lee Scamehorn.

This new non-fiction work published by Dog Ear Publishing is an in-depth study of the industrial boom centering around the food canning and preserving industries in dozens of communities in northeastern Colorado from the end of the nineteenth century to the industry’s downfall in the mid-to-late twentieth century.

The history of food preservation goes back as far as human memory; every great civilization had at least one method of keeping food from spoiling, but modern canning practices came into being at the very end of the 18th century in France, where the government offered financial compensation to anyone who could come up with a method of preserving food for the military. Chef Nicolas Appert created the method that is still in use today, the method that played a vital role in the industrialization of  northeastern Colorado in the 19th and 20th centuries.  To the rural residents of Colorado, the canning industry that sprang to life there were a vital source of income, creating a nutritious and delicious source of food for the region.  These canneries loomed large until their eventual defeat at the hands of the giants such as Libby, McNeill and Libby, as well as Stokely-Van Camp, companies that continue to serve the entire nation’s canned food needs.  But what of the men and women who helped to foster the boom of industry in Colorado?

John C. Kuner’s need to support his family after their move to Denver formed the basis of one of the great canning companies in Colorado; pickling vegetables in his home kitchen, Kuner went door-to-door selling his goods to Denver households seeking some variance in their diet during the winter months.   Kuner and his brother, Max, eventually formed Kuner Pickle Company, with Max gradually buying his brother’s share of the business and building the business into one of Denver’s most venerable institutions.  John  Howard Empson came to Colorado at his doctor’s urging, seeking a cure for his infected lungs.  Empson, a successful businessman in Cincinnati, was inclined to ignore his doctor’s advice, but he was eventually swayed by his seven-year-old daughter, Alida.  Son of a grocer, Empson soon realized the value of canned food, and decided to take advantage of the city dweller’s inability to grow their own food.  Kuner and Empson’s businesses boomed, and both companies spread their canning factories throughout rural Colorado.

Colorado’s Small Town Industrial Revolution is a fascinating glimpse into a long-ago time, full of vivid portraits of the men and women who helped to build Colorado into the state it is today.  Professor emeritus Lee Scamehorn has brought history to life in this, his fifth book.  Scamehorn, a graduate of Western Michigan University and the University of Illinois, taught history at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

New Memoir Shares Couple’s Pain, Recovery after Abortions

Dog Ear Publishing releases “A Voice to the Inner Pain: A Path to Faith, Hope and Grace” by Jodi and Ron Miller.

The author’s three abortions led to years of shame, denial and pain before she begins the process of healing. In this new release from Dog Ear Publishing, Jodi Miller candidly details the effects of the abortions in her life and that of her husband, Ron. She also describes their path to recovery, which includes counseling, prayer and a special retreat.

Although a lifetime of choices influenced Jodi Miller’s decision to have multiple abortions, it was her decision to seek God’s help in healing that finally put her on the path to recovering from that trauma. Jodi went through almost 20 years of shame, denial and suffering in silence before taking a hard look at her life and trying to work through her pain. This new book explores misconceptions about abortion – especially that it solves problems instead of creating them.

“A Voice to the Inner Pain” features heartfelt words from a woman who has lived through abortions and the often painful consequences that follow. Forced to choose between babies and her partner, Jodi ultimately chooses to end her pregnancies. Issues of abandonment, insecurity and depression strain their relationship as the enormity of the loss sinks in. Counseling helps her begin to heal, and an inspirational book gives Miller the courage she needs to ask for God’s help. By making small leaps of faith, gradually their lives begin to improve. Family relationships heal as Jodi and her sister pray together and she reconnects with her father.

A post-abortion retreat for the couple with unexpected revelations brings them closer to each other and to recovering from the loss of their daughters, Faith, Hope and Grace. This book, a rich resource for anyone who has terminated a pregnancy, includes a list of symptoms of post-abortion syndrome, as well as resources for those looking for help, providing additional lifelines to those in pain. As the author writes, “There is hope and healing for those who are suffering from post-abortion syndrome, whether it is the woman who endured the procedure, the father, grandparents or family member of an aborted child or someone who helped participate in an abortion. Allow God to give you a voice to your inner pain.”

Author Jodi Miller, who grew up in a broken home, experienced three abortions before marrying her boyfriend. She dropped out of high school and obtained her GED. Counseling and a retreat revealed that Jodi had post-abortion syndrome. She and her husband, Ron, share their story of healing and hope in the aftermath of abortion by speaking to high school students, churches and through radio and television shows. They are available for speaking engagements.

Professor Promotes Support for Government in New Release; Book by Douglas Amy

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Government Is Good: An Unapologetic Defense of a Vital Institution” by Douglas Amy.

A political science professor tackles recent criticisms of the U.S. government, a full-blown movement that he says is getting worse. This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing focuses on the benefits of government and how reductions in programs and regulations have affected negatively Americans. The author also describes government’s faults and proposes possible solutions to fixing some of them and putting government in a more positive light.

The author takes on what he sees as an anti-government movement and backs up his claims that critics of government highly exaggerate its ineffectiveness. “Conservatives and libertarians have demonized government, attacked basic safety net programs like Medicare, and undermined vital regulations that protect consumers, investors, workers, and the environment,” Douglas Amy writes in this new book. He calls for the public to support the country’s government and its power to improve lives.

“Government Is Good” focuses first on the benefits of government for society, chronicling an average middle-class American’s life and describing how government programs support that life. In this first section, Amy also provides examples of government achievements that may have been forgotten, such as the role government plays in disease prevention, workplace safety, and basic science research. . The book’s second section features descriptions of cuts in social programs and regulations and how they have affected Americans across the country. It tackles such tough topics as tax cuts,  government deficits, and the scapegoating of government.

Amy freely admits that government and its accompanying bureaucracy are not perfect. In fact, the final section offers his analysis of how to improve government, recognizing its faults and proposing several reforms. Chapter headings themselves reveal Amy’s thinking: What is Really Wrong with American Government, How to Fix American Government and Revive Democracy, and Building a Pro-Government Campaign. He provides specific examples of how individuals can help revitalize government – through supporting campaign finance reform, talking correctly about government and reducing stereotypes. Amy makes other suggestions, such as the government better publicizing what Americans get for their tax dollars, and a shift in media coverage. “It should be part of the media’s civic obligation to give the American public more accurate information about the role that government is playing in their lives,” he writes.

Author Douglas Amy, professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College, created governmentis good.com, the website that inspired this book. Amy’s book “Real Choices/New Voices: How Proportional Representation Elections Could Revitalize American Democracy” earned the George H. Hallett Award given by the American Political Science Association.
