New Non-Fiction Release Delves Into History of the Commercial Food Canning and Preserving Industry in Northeastern Colorado

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Colorado’s Small Town Industrial Revolution” by Lee Scamehorn.

This new non-fiction work published by Dog Ear Publishing is an in-depth study of the industrial boom centering around the food canning and preserving industries in dozens of communities in northeastern Colorado from the end of the nineteenth century to the industry’s downfall in the mid-to-late twentieth century.

The history of food preservation goes back as far as human memory; every great civilization had at least one method of keeping food from spoiling, but modern canning practices came into being at the very end of the 18th century in France, where the government offered financial compensation to anyone who could come up with a method of preserving food for the military. Chef Nicolas Appert created the method that is still in use today, the method that played a vital role in the industrialization of  northeastern Colorado in the 19th and 20th centuries.  To the rural residents of Colorado, the canning industry that sprang to life there were a vital source of income, creating a nutritious and delicious source of food for the region.  These canneries loomed large until their eventual defeat at the hands of the giants such as Libby, McNeill and Libby, as well as Stokely-Van Camp, companies that continue to serve the entire nation’s canned food needs.  But what of the men and women who helped to foster the boom of industry in Colorado?

John C. Kuner’s need to support his family after their move to Denver formed the basis of one of the great canning companies in Colorado; pickling vegetables in his home kitchen, Kuner went door-to-door selling his goods to Denver households seeking some variance in their diet during the winter months.   Kuner and his brother, Max, eventually formed Kuner Pickle Company, with Max gradually buying his brother’s share of the business and building the business into one of Denver’s most venerable institutions.  John  Howard Empson came to Colorado at his doctor’s urging, seeking a cure for his infected lungs.  Empson, a successful businessman in Cincinnati, was inclined to ignore his doctor’s advice, but he was eventually swayed by his seven-year-old daughter, Alida.  Son of a grocer, Empson soon realized the value of canned food, and decided to take advantage of the city dweller’s inability to grow their own food.  Kuner and Empson’s businesses boomed, and both companies spread their canning factories throughout rural Colorado.

Colorado’s Small Town Industrial Revolution is a fascinating glimpse into a long-ago time, full of vivid portraits of the men and women who helped to build Colorado into the state it is today.  Professor emeritus Lee Scamehorn has brought history to life in this, his fifth book.  Scamehorn, a graduate of Western Michigan University and the University of Illinois, taught history at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Soon after his father’s sparsely attended funeral, Brad begins dreaming about people who beckon him to a better place. New Memoir Shares Couple’s Pain, Recovery after Abortions

Dog Ear Publishing releases “A Voice to the Inner Pain: A Path to Faith, Hope and Grace” by Jodi and Ron Miller.

The author’s three abortions led to years of shame, denial and pain before she begins the process of healing. In this new release from Dog Ear Publishing, Jodi Miller candidly details the effects of the abortions in her life and that of her husband, Ron. She also describes their path to recovery, which includes counseling, prayer and a special retreat.

Although a lifetime of choices influenced Jodi Miller’s decision to have multiple abortions, it was her decision to seek God’s help in healing that finally put her on the path to recovering from that trauma. Jodi went through almost 20 years of shame, denial and suffering in silence before taking a hard look at her life and trying to work through her pain. This new book explores misconceptions about abortion – especially that it solves problems instead of creating them.

“A Voice to the Inner Pain” features heartfelt words from a woman who has lived through abortions and the often painful consequences that follow. Forced to choose between babies and her partner, Jodi ultimately chooses to end her pregnancies. Issues of abandonment, insecurity and depression strain their relationship as the enormity of the loss sinks in. Counseling helps her begin to heal, and an inspirational book gives Miller the courage she needs to ask for God’s help. By making small leaps of faith, gradually their lives begin to improve. Family relationships heal as Jodi and her sister pray together and she reconnects with her father.

A post-abortion retreat for the couple with unexpected revelations brings them closer to each other and to recovering from the loss of their daughters, Faith, Hope and Grace. This book, a rich resource for anyone who has terminated a pregnancy, includes a list of symptoms of post-abortion syndrome, as well as resources for those looking for help, providing additional lifelines to those in pain. As the author writes, “There is hope and healing for those who are suffering from post-abortion syndrome, whether it is the woman who endured the procedure, the father, grandparents or family member of an aborted child or someone who helped participate in an abortion. Allow God to give you a voice to your inner pain.”

Author Jodi Miller, who grew up in a broken home, experienced three abortions before marrying her boyfriend. She dropped out of high school and obtained her GED. Counseling and a retreat revealed that Jodi had post-abortion syndrome. She and her husband, Ron, share their story of healing and hope in the aftermath of abortion by speaking to high school students, churches and through radio and television shows. They are available for speaking engagements.

Professor Promotes Support for Government in New Release; Book by Douglas Amy

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Government Is Good: An Unapologetic Defense of a Vital Institution” by Douglas Amy.

A political science professor tackles recent criticisms of the U.S. government, a full-blown movement that he says is getting worse. This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing focuses on the benefits of government and how reductions in programs and regulations have affected negatively Americans. The author also describes government’s faults and proposes possible solutions to fixing some of them and putting government in a more positive light.

The author takes on what he sees as an anti-government movement and backs up his claims that critics of government highly exaggerate its ineffectiveness. “Conservatives and libertarians have demonized government, attacked basic safety net programs like Medicare, and undermined vital regulations that protect consumers, investors, workers, and the environment,” Douglas Amy writes in this new book. He calls for the public to support the country’s government and its power to improve lives.

“Government Is Good” focuses first on the benefits of government for society, chronicling an average middle-class American’s life and describing how government programs support that life. In this first section, Amy also provides examples of government achievements that may have been forgotten, such as the role government plays in disease prevention, workplace safety, and basic science research. . The book’s second section features descriptions of cuts in social programs and regulations and how they have affected Americans across the country. It tackles such tough topics as tax cuts,  government deficits, and the scapegoating of government.

Amy freely admits that government and its accompanying bureaucracy are not perfect. In fact, the final section offers his analysis of how to improve government, recognizing its faults and proposing several reforms. Chapter headings themselves reveal Amy’s thinking: What is Really Wrong with American Government, How to Fix American Government and Revive Democracy, and Building a Pro-Government Campaign. He provides specific examples of how individuals can help revitalize government – through supporting campaign finance reform, talking correctly about government and reducing stereotypes. Amy makes other suggestions, such as the government better publicizing what Americans get for their tax dollars, and a shift in media coverage. “It should be part of the media’s civic obligation to give the American public more accurate information about the role that government is playing in their lives,” he writes.

Author Douglas Amy, professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College, created governmentis good.com, the website that inspired this book. Amy’s book “Real Choices/New Voices: How Proportional Representation Elections Could Revitalize American Democracy” earned the George H. Hallett Award given by the American Political Science Association.

New Collection of Political Cartoons – An Unflinching View of the World in a Book by Cartoonist Paul Jamiol

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Paul Jamiol’s World 2008-2010” by Paul Jamiol.

This new collection of more than 150 political cartoons released by Dog Ear Publishing features a nationally recognized cartoonist’s take on world events from 2008 to 2010.

With the power of his artist’s pen, cartoonist Paul Jamiol states his opinions on issues such as the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, terrorism, fear, hatred, torture, the fallen and human rights. Covering the Obama and Bush administrations, the artist comments on politicians on both sides of the aisle, as well as the media. This collection features over 150 cartoons, out of 450 that Jamiol inked in that period.  Airport security scanners, lack of support for gays in the military, offshore drilling and disregard for veterans all come under fire.  His images convey the issues clearly, sometimes with wit, sometimes with poignancy, but always with power.

The cartoons in “Paul Jamiol’s World 2008-2010” show the power political cartoonists wield with their ability to convey complex ideas with a simple drawing and a few lines of text. As friend Ed Youngblood writes in the foreword, Jamiol’s images “can quickly flip the world right-side-up again after the politicians and pundits have done their best to turn it upside-down. Jamiol’s work also reminds us that the magic of the cartoonist is his ability to make us laugh when there seems to be nothing to laugh about. Jamiol’s pen is a sharp sword that usually cuts in the shape of a smile.”

Author Paul Jamiol has been drawing cartoons for 40 years and has been recognized locally, nationally and internationally.  His current work can be seen on his website, Jamiol’s World, as well as TheZoo and Boiling Frogs Post blogs.  Jamiol first entered the world of political cartoons by drawing for one local newspaper, and soon was working for five separate newspapers, covering a different issue for each. He has written and illustrated three children’s books through Dog Ear Publishing.

New Release Puts Evolutionary Spin on Fantasy; Book by Bruce Rowe

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Chrystalis Creatures of the Highlands” by Bruce Rowe.

Warrior rabbits and power-hungry wolves do battle in this new fantasy released by Dog Ear Publishing. The author gains inspiration from Celtic legends, the Bible and evolution to create this story of a quest and the characters who join it.

A sign in the heavens revealing the start of a long-forgotten prophecy sets the stage for an adventure that features primordial rabbits known as lagomorphs. In this imaginative new story, six lagomorphs – each with different skills – must travel into Black Wood, a forest filled with evil and bewitchments, to find the Warren of Warriors and other allies. This group of feral rabbits has pledged to fight to preserve the freedom of their species until the Chrysalis arrives – an event that will change their world forever.

In “The Chrysalis Creatures of the Highlands,” the author draws on Celtic myths and legends, as well as the Gita, the Bible and evolutionary theories to create a fantastical tale that features rabbits strong enough to kill wolves.  Illustrations by artist Lindsay Stone bring the setting and its inhabitants, including night flyers, ferocious wolves, enormous toads and flying squirrels, to life. During their quest, the warriors gain unexpected allies, such as the giant dragonflies who provide assistance to repay a debt. In the end, however, the rabbit warriors must rely on each other to find the courage to fight their final battle.

Author Bruce Rowe spent four years researching and writing “The Chrysalis: Creatures of the Highlands,” traversing the terrain from southern California to Oregon. Rowe has written poetry and children’s poems, some of which are posted at www.scribd.com. He and his wife, Donna, live in southern California.

Illustrations Take Center Stage in Re-telling of Coyote’s Legend; Children’s Book by Brad Whitewolf

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Coyote Visions” by Brad Whitewolf.

Vivid illustrations help tell the story of Coyote, a hero and trickster in American Indian legends credited with bringing the buffalo to the plains. This new children’s book from Dog Ear Publishing relays the legend in easy-to-understand language appropriate for reading aloud.

Coyote, the culture hero and trickster of many Native American people, may seem like an unlikely hero, but legend has it that he saved people from hunger. This new imaginative, illustrated book tells the story of how Coyote brought the buffalo to the plains after a drought burned crops, leaving people desperate and hungry.

In “Coyote Visions,” the author retells the American Indian story of the Great Spirit, who puts great responsibility on Coyote, asking him to provide food and shelter for the people. In the legend, buffalo live in the clouds, far from the hunters’ reach. Coyote shoots arrows into the sky to create a ladder, climbs up and carves a hole through the sky. He confronts the lead buffalo and tricks him into charging him. Once the herd sees their leader running, they soon follow him through the hole in the clouds and land on the prairie.

Graphic illustrator Brad Whitewolf, an oral storyteller, has shared this story of Coyote around campfires, in schools and in theaters. This book allows his colorful illustrations to help tell the story, showing the passion he has for the legend. Whitewolf is working on another book, “Coyote the Trickster,” which will explore Coyote’s trickster nature. Whitewolf, who lives in Wesley, Ark., illustrated “The Dream – I Wanna Fly” children’s book written by Beth Severe for the Aviation Cadet Museum.

New Memoir Recounts Young Milk Delivery Boy’s Experiences; Book by John LaRizzio

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Hey, Milkman!” by John LaRizzio.

Explore the life of a milk delivery boy in the 1960s with this charming memoir by John LaRizzio. The book, newly released by Dog Ear Publishing, details his daily routine as well as insights into that nostalgic time.

In the summer of 1964, 14-year-old John LaRizzio begins working as a morning milk delivery boy, running products to customers’ doorsteps and front porches. In return, this shy young man earns $10 per week and all the chocolate milk he can drink. It becomes his routine from 5 to 7 a.m. six days a week, 52 weeks a year, for the next five years. His memories of those years – and his insights years later – tell their own story in this new book from Dog Ear Publishing.

“Hey, Milkman!” features descriptions of the small Pennsylvania community where John lives, which has one bank, one traffic light, one state liquor store and one family-owned supermarket, as well as many mom and pop shops. Many of the shops sold Bear Creek Dairy products, stocked faithfully by John and his teenage companion. Delivering milk allows John to intimately know the neighborhoods and homes within them, the dogs he can trust and the gates that require an extra push to latch. Through good weather and bad, customers can count on their dairy delivery, and all the time outdoors nurtures John’s love of nature.

This casual memoir opens a window to the past for those who grew up with milk deliveries and offers the discovery of another era to those who didn’t. The book recalls what he learned during his “milkman mornings” and helps him rediscover his true self. The author’s story flows easily, shedding light on a series of somewhat ordinary events rather than focusing on just his highs and lows, capturing his experience of growing up. As LaRizzio writes, “I’ve come to comprehend that we are the sum of our total lifetime’s fortunes, not just of those brief, few days that we claim to be among our worst or our finest.”

Author John LaRizzio served 35 years as a project engineer, engineering manager and director of engineering for a major U.S. corporation after graduating from Penn State University. He worked for five years as a milk deliveryman in his hometown of Nesquehoning, Pa., forming a bond with nature that continues to inspire his poetry and prose. “Hey, Milkman!” – his first book – also features some of LaRizzio’s poetry.

New Children’s Book View Domestic Violence Through Young Girl’s Eyes; Book by Baaqia Uqdah

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Ibby’s Feelings” by Baaqia Uqdah.

This new release from Dog Ear Publishing tackles the serious subject of domestic violence in homes of young children. A 4-year-old girl serves as the heroine of this story, which is aimed at inspiring discussion after children see domestic violence.

Four-year-old Ibby is like most other preschoolers: She has a mom who takes her to preschool, lots of friends and loving grandparents. She also has typical emotions for a young girl, feeling pretty when wearing her grandmother’s hat and feeling happy when she jumps in the leaves, notes this new book from Dog Ear Publishing. It’s what she feels when her daddy gets mad and what happens when he does that sets this young girl apart from her peers.

“Ibby’s Feelings,” designed to be read out loud with young children, focuses on a young girl who sees domestic violence in her home; Ibby’s father hits his wife hard enough to send her to the hospital. Once again, Ibby’s feelings turn from happiness to fear and sadness. The author, who saw domestic violence herself when young, offers a story that paves the way for adults and children to talk about the shame, rage, fear and pain domestic violence brings, sometimes without warning.

The story, told in simple words, can help adults who work with children and help children to discuss their feelings. Ultimately, the book is a “cry for help from the young child who is witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence, and the wounded child who lives within adults who witnessed or experienced domestic violence as children,” the author writes.

Author Baaqia Uqdah spent more than 35 years caring for young children and educating them, including directing a child care center and training teachers. After retirement, she served as a domestic violence victims advocate. She is pursuing a domestic violence specialist certification in New Jersey, focusing on the impact of domestic violence on very young children. The book grew from her work with students expressing their feelings with language arts and her realization of the power of a children’s book to teach adults.

New Book Describes One Woman’s Journey After Suffering a Stroke; Book by Sharon Leitheiser

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Embrace the Moment: Life After Stroke” by Sharon Leitheiser.

A sudden stroke changes Sharon Leitheiser’s life forever. This new release from Dog Ear Publishing details Sharon’s slow recovery process, highlighting both the highs and lows of this former teacher’s new path in life.

When she began her day Aug. 11, 1996, Sharon Leitheiser had no idea her life would change forever. She and her husband, Hal, had enjoyed a rare day of fun at the Edmonds Fair. At home, Sharon complains of a headache and other symptoms, which they attribute to the rich food at the fair. The next day, she talks in gibberish on the phone when Hal calls to check on her. An MRI at the hospital reveals that Sharon has had a hemorrhagic stroke. The devastating event leaves her with aphasia, a serious speech and language impairment, and short-term memory problems. This new book tells her inspiring story.

“Embrace the Moment” is a story about Sharon’s recovery from the stroke and its aftermath of depression. Sharon’s life had its ups and downs, and she explores what happened to her family following alcoholism and drug dependency. Hal’s drinking causes financial hardship, and a debilitating accident puts him on disability for years. A son’s drug use puts the family under further strain. Her husband, Hal, who quit drinking shortly after Sharon’s “bleeder”, and friends keep her on focused on what’s important – recovery. Slowly she begins to work on putting words in her long-term memory, and her ability to communicate improves.

The author is unafraid to show all aspects of recovery, from high points of attending gatherings with friends to low points of falling down while jogging and feeling worthless. The poems she includes in the book provide insights into her emotions. The road to recovery was long and hard, but Sharon remains confident. As she writes, “My journey through life has been filled with not only loss, grief, anger and confusion, but also with joy, happiness, love, surprises, and ongoing possibilities that brought me peace and fulfillment.

Author Sharon Leitheiser taught for many years in a farming community near Great Falls, Mont., before moving to the Seattle area to teach. She retired after her stroke but continues to inspire people with her writing and experiences. She and her husband, Hal, have three children and six grandchildren.
